Should I tip for massages in Thailand? How much should I tip for massages?
These are probably the most commonly asked questions regarding tipping in Thailand massages.
Tipping is not mandatory in Thailand, but it is appreciated. I would almost always tip for the massage, how much to tip will depend on how good the service was and which kind of shop or spa I am visiting, let me explain why:-
Commission Based-Pay
Many masseuses work on a commission-based income. The commission can range from around 40% to 60% of the price of the massage.
For example, for a one-hour full-body Thai Massage that costs 300 Thai Baht, the masseuses will receive 120-180 Thai Baht. That is not a lot of money for one hour of hard physical work, and so I always choose to tip a good amount to the masseuses.
Tipping In Thailand Massages
Usually, the tip will range from 15-20% of the cost of the massage, I have seen people tipping over 100 Thai Baht, I guess it was one hell of a good massage!
Basic massage etiquette in Thailand – hygiene, never changing your clothes in front of the staff, and other basic etiquette and manners are important to know beforehand. Read our guide on what you should know before a Thai Massage here.

How much to tip for Thai massage?
Tipping for massages is recommended in Thailand, how much you should tip for massages in Thailand will depend on the final price.
I would typically tip around 15-20%, depending on how good the overall service was. If it was the best massage ever, the tip would be even larger.
Do I take my clothes off for a Thai massage?
Always wear the amount of clothes you are comfortable with.
For a full-body traditional Thai massage, occasionally, you will be asked to take off your shirt or tops, as it will be easier to apply massage oil or lotions. However, if you feel uncomfortable doing so, don’t be afraid to speak up.
